Inviolable Laws of Bush Whacking
« on: September 30, 2019, 09:04:24 AM »

The below is a complete list of the inviolable laws pertaining to the art of bush whacking:

1. Thou shall NOT wear shorts while bush whacking.
2. Thou shall NOT break rule 1.

Ask me how I know...

I learned these truths at the expense of my shins! They look like I lost a fight with a feral cat. But the view this weekend was worth it. :)

Please feel free to add to the list with your inviolable laws for off trail exploration.

#3 If you choose to ignore the first two rules don't complain about all the blood

Just kidding, my real #3 was bring a map (or gps) so you don't get lost while bashing around in rhodo

Back in 2001/2002 I did a whole lot of bushwacking.
I did wear long pants, but that didn't help my upper body when I slid down a root covered chute and had to slow my descent by wedging my forearms against the narrow sandstone slot as I was sliding toward a drop-off:

And earlier that day I got bit by a copperhead... Lol. A very young one, fortunately. It's fangs were too small to break the skin on my thumb. I caught him because I wanted my hiking partner to get a close up of the chartreuse tails the babies have. I think they were too shook up to get a pic of the tail:

Gotta love the off-trail fun!

OUCHY!!!  :(
Colder weather is better for exploring...wearing long pants, long sleeved shirt, long underwear & jacket provides extra layers of protection.  :D  But as of August 64th the weather hasn't cooled down!  :'(

HA! You got that right! I haven't seen a better description of this weather. So thankful real Fall weather arrives tomorrow!

Shaman may have already won for most hardcore bush-whacking. With that in mind I think I'll add rule 4 as a follow up to rule 3 and Shaman's post:

4. Nobody makes me bleed my own blood, nobody!

I'll be in the Gorge before daybreak tomorrow morning, also thankful for the Fall weather! Maybe I'll be hiking by the soft glow of forest fires 'til sunrise? Cool weather is nice, but for someone who lives on a farm and raises a lot of their own food, this drought sucks big-time. WE NEED RAIN. My pond is 3 feet below normal summer pool. Fortunately it is spring-fed and quite deep. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN. WE NEED RAIN...

Ouchy is right! I still have the scars, nice long stripes. Hey, I definitely agree with your recommendations for bushwacking, the clothing, the cold weather, etc. But heck, I was young then, just turned 50 and thought I was invincible. You know how young punks are.

I figured I'd add photographic evidence that proves the worthiness of bush-whacking, even if I foolishly wore shorts. Location will not be revealed. The super sleuths can deduce all they like. :)

Two more rules I thought of this morning:

5. When in doubt, just keep going.
6. You're almost there.
