quick overnight Two Lakes Loop
« on: December 10, 2017, 11:49:15 AM »

Took a buddy out for his first overnight backpacking trip on Thursday night, hiked the 7 mile segment around Indian Lake in Hoosier National Forrest.  We had a overnight low of 18F, but he did great.  It was special being there on a Thursday night in the cold, not seeing or hearing a single other person anywhere.

Also, I will report great success from my most recent purchase, a 15'' Sven Saw.  If you're even considering a saw, this is the one.  It processed wood so quick and make fire wood collecting a breeze.  I just grabbed a fallen dead tree, drug it to camp, and within 15 minutes had enough wood cut to burn all night.  Worth every bit of the 10 oz in my pack and folded up easy into my Therm-A-Rest Z Lite sleep pad.

This was also my first sub freezing temperature night ground sleeping under the tarp.  I may never turn back.  It was cozy with a lean-to capturing heat from the fire.  Much better than sleeping in a tent during the winter.

On the down side, they've poured several gravel roads for logging, including several areas of gravel path along the trail near the dam.  It took away from the experience a bit, but hiking after dark from our car to camp on Thursday evening, it wasn't that big of a deal.

A few pictures from an area I'm sure you all know very well:

Your campsite looks like its the spot directly across the lake from the boat ramp? The last picture of the water crossing is the one where there really is no good spot to get across the water without getting your feet wet; unless it has been really dry.  Frequently the water here is way over the tops of my boots.

Thanks for posting the trip report, cool to see that area again as I did some of my first backpacking trips there. I definitely remember that creek crossing well!
