Tunnel Ridge Road
« on: August 29, 2002, 01:28:33 AM »

A little ranger bird in Stanton told me some good news.  Tunnel Ridge Road is going to open this Friday afternoon (8/30/02).  So after a long time, about a year I believe, the road will be open past the Grey's Arch parking area with some major changes.  Parking will be limited to designated areas only.  I was also told that FS law enforcement will be out in full force, so you've been warned!

You are guilty and must die by roadside trash hurling.

The biggest change that they made, and the one that I think will have the most impact, is that they closed the road past Auxier Ridge.  No more car camping at the end of the road.  To get there now, you're stuck with Shanks Mare.  Maybe now it can become a backpacker's camping destination.

Thats good because it looked really bad there.
I can't wait to see what all they've done.

That area really did neat a break for a while.  Glad to see they redid the road, as well as keeping people out of the area.

It was wild when Jill and I biked out to the end of TRR over Memorial Day weekend.  There was this cool emptiness at the end of the road.  All the signs, fences, vault toilet, kiosk, etc was still there but there were no cars, no party campers out that ridge, and most noticably no buckeyes hootin' and hollarin'.  Man it was nice, if only it could have stayed like that longer.
