Title: Camping at Koomer Ridge
Post by: Lynne on August 21, 2002, 11:45:47 AM
Is it safe to leave your camp set up at Koomer Ridge during the day, or has theft been a problem?  I'm taking the family for a weekend of climbing, and with all our crap I don't want to hike in anywhere or break it down every morning unless I have to.

Thanks!

I never had a problem there.

Koomer should be pretty safe, but lock up anything of real value in your car.  But typical camping stuff should be safe.

Check out the short hike to Silver Mine arch.  I think the trail begins at the rear of the Koomer camping grounds.  Also, don't hike around Koomer after dark; there are 1,000' cliffs which border much of the campground, great for sunrises but bad for night hikes.

Silvermine Arch Trail is still listed as closed on the DBNF Page, so you may want to check if you plan on hiking there.  It is a really cool trail though.   And short.

Its open - we did it a few weekends ago....the trail was probably closed for new construction of the stairs......its a nice trail though - coming back out is a little rough....

One thousand foot cliffs around Koomer Ridge?!??!?  Man I've been climbing in the wrong parts of the Gorge for the past seven years.

With that many feet,  I bet it smells bad.....

Cool.  I typed some various punctuation marks and ended up with some little faces rolling their eyes.  I've never used those silly smiley things before and when they accidently pop up in my post they sorta fit.

Not to take away from the cliff dangers, a fall from an 80 foot cliff could hurt just as bad as a fall from a 100 foot one.
