Title: More LIDAR maps
Post by: jacksan on June 15, 2018, 09:41:56 PM
Finally got the LIDAR data and a really good topo overlay working on Android.
Ths best parts is that no custom/manual mapping is required.

The 5-foot DEM LIDAR data is from KYs WMS map server. Supports up to zoom layer 18

The topo map is the US Forest Service "FSTopo" map. It has nicely drawn contours, waterways, points of interest AND most of the official hiking trails. It supports up to zoom layer 16. This is available from their tile (not WMS) map server. There was a problem with it only zooming to layer 15 but I reported it and they had it fixed in a week or so. They were super helpful and responsive.!!

There's a little problem you should be aware of. FSTopo only goes to layer 16 while the LIDAR goes to 18. If you zoom past 16 you have 2 choices: Display only the LIDAR at full resolution or display both maps but they will use digital zoom. See the images below.

Ths software is OruxMaps for Android, free. You have to get it from their website, not Google Play: http://www.oruxmaps.com/cs/en/ (http://www.oruxmaps.com/cs/en/). To make the map you have to edit a couple of files (put in the WMS and Tile server addresses)  then create a MultiMap (overlay) map in Oruxmaps. Pretty easy.

If interested I'll post the instructions.

Wow! Maps look amazing! It's hard to compete against a Garmin device with this LiDAR layer! A whole new ball game for portable mapping while hiking.

Give these instructions a try, let me know how they work out.
I tried to upload the XML source files but the BBS doesn't allow that. You will have to edit them yourself per the instructions. Or, PM me and I can email them to you.

This is awesome, thanks for posting... putting it on my Android now.

If I had this last weekend I may have actually given bushwhacking to Cumberland Falls from Dog Slaughter a shot (give the river was flooded over the trail)
