Went on a site survey; got destroyed by chiggers n ticks more than I ever have on any single hike. Land owners were clear cutters. Awful.

The red was looking great yesterday. Wish I had time to go to Muir today.

Hang Em High Horse Camp, or White Oak Boat in; north a bit from there near Horse Lick Creek is the S-tree primitive camps, it's actually quite nice.
If you want large, then of course you're back to state park and lake campgrounds.

Road Closures in the Gorge
« on: January 09, 2019, 05:28:33 PM »

Can anyone confirm this...all the SAR units were reporting yesterday that despite the government shutdown, all the gravel Forest Service roads were to be gated shut at sundown last night for the remainder of the "Winter season"?

that's outrageous but I understand their reasoning.

I know during the last shutdown the gates were closed.

Regardless of the reason, I think it is great to have these roads closed for a while to allow those areas to recover a bit.

Chimney Top was open on Sunday, but could be closed now.

After hearing about what's going on in the National Parks and seeing the trees destroyed at Joshua Tree, I'm ok with this.

I hope they lock the gates and never unlock them :)

Better yet just destroy all of the roads beginning at the boundary of the park making all of the main attractions at least a mile hike. This would help with the budget and make this area pristine again!

I was up on Auxier Ridge yesterday with no one around and no foot prints in the dusting of snow. It was awesome. No idea if TRR is shut (I took the long way), but I really like the gorge without anyone else :)

every 5 or 10 years they should do a full year shutdown except to backpackers, to enable full regrowth and work on their educational facilities.

TRR was open to Greys Arch but the gate there was locked with a sign saying something about "resource preservation". Hope they leave it locked forever.

The weather was close to perfect today (Sat, 2/16) and the gorge was packed. I parked at Greys Arch along with a bunch of other people, but I walked out TRR and only saw a couple dayhikers and a couple different groups of backpackers.

Also drove up 715 to Wildcat Trailhead, Chimney Top Road was gated and there were a couple cars parked in front of the gate. My next target in the gorge might be Chimney Top from the Rough Trail.

It was a beautiful day yesterday (2/26) in the gorge, sadly the Chimney Top gate was open. I assume this means the other gates are open as well.
