Went on a site survey; got destroyed by chiggers n ticks more than I ever have on any single hike. Land owners were clear cutters. Awful.

The red was looking great yesterday. Wish I had time to go to Muir today.

Hang Em High Horse Camp, or White Oak Boat in; north a bit from there near Horse Lick Creek is the S-tree primitive camps, it's actually quite nice.
If you want large, then of course you're back to state park and lake campgrounds.

I'm looking for info regarding backcountry camping in the DBNF London District, preferably near Buck Creek.  Bee Rock and Rockcastle Campgrounds are both closed and we'd prefer to camp more primitively. Little Lick is small and best suited for horses.
Suggestions?

another death

Another drunk person falls off a cliff in the gorge. This one was Whistling Arch, are there any legal campsites near Whistling?

My condolences to the family

Just read another version of the story and it sounds like it was LSD not alcohol. Tripping at the top of a cliff just sounds like a bad idea, likely to lead to actually tripping off the edge of the cliff

it's almost the very definition of a bad idea.

Very unfortunate and I want to be respectful for the dead and not with inappropriate dark humor, but as you already eluded to the irony. Tripping while literally tripping off a cliff. These headlines apparently write themselves sometimes.

Just to be clear, I was not trying to be funny. It just seems like a really bad idea. I feel bad for the family and I feel bad for S&R, it seems like they do a lot of body recoveries in the gorge.

Absolutely, I know you weren't inferring anything funny. I was eluding to the irony as much as it's extremely unfortunate.

Quite honestly, the reality is that it could happen to any one of us, intoxicated or not. It will always remain one of the many grim reminders that we are in mother nature's playground and should always use extreme caution.

I was on top of Whistling Arch Sunday after the hike.  There was a tent pitched directly in the middle of the overlook.  Not sure how that fits the "legal" definition.  Always hate to hear these stories...
