Zaleski State Forest - Ohio
« on: February 04, 2017, 10:10:53 AM »

Anyone ever been to Zaleski?  It's about a 4 hour drive from Louisville.  From what i'm seeing, one of the most popular backpacking trails in Ohio is the front 9 miles of this loop, with a total backpacking loop of about 24+ miles.

I'm kicking this idea around as a mid February trip.

I've hiked the south loop and done some bushwhacking. Some old mining and quarrying remnants out there, in addition to a couple of abandoned railroad tunnels. The BPO description talks about one of these (Moonville) and alludes to the other, as well as the Balanced Rock.

The trails were in good shape last I was out there (May 2015); well-groomed and marked. They have some good ups and downs (for Ohio). In winter, you'll get some better views.

There may not be potable water at the campsites in winter. The campsites are decent and should not be crowded at all in Feb.

It's on my list to head back out there in the spring.

Thanks for the feedback.  It sounds like a worthy drive.
