Forest Service celebrates National Trails Day, waives recreation fees

WINCHESTER, Ky. – It’s a day fittingly celebrated on national forest lands each year, and the Daniel Boone National Forest provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy National Trails Day in America’s great outdoors. Fees will be waived at several recreation areas in recognition of National Trails Day.

The National Trails Day was established by the American Hiking Society to promote educational awareness about our nation’s 200,000 miles of trails. The society encourages outdoor recreation, volunteer service, and the experience of nature through hiking.

Hiking is considered one of the most popular outdoor recreation activities in the country. The Daniel Boone National Forest provides nearly 600 miles of trail, including the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, for multiple user-groups.

Fee-free dates and locations
On June 4-5, no recreation fee pass is required for backcountry overnight camping in the Red River Gorge.
On June 5-6, no recreation fee pass is required at the following locations:
Cave Run Lake – all boat ramps
Laurel River Lake – all boat ramps
Natural Arch Scenic Area, McCreary County
Barren Fork Horse Camp, McCreary County
        Appletree Shooting Range, McCreary County
        Keno Shooting Range, Pulaski County
Redbird Crest Trail, Clay and Leslie counties
White Sulphur ATV Trail, Bath County

Volunteer Service
On June 5, several volunteer groups will be conducting trail maintenance in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
The Red River Gorge Trail Crew will remove brush from designated trails in the Clifty Wilderness using hand tools only. This volunteer group plans to clear up to eight miles of trail across steep terrain.
The Sheltowee Trace Association will repair trail tread and rebuild wooden steps along a three mile stretch of the Sheltowee Trace in McCreary County. On the day prior, the group will conduct trail maintenance classes for volunteers to learn the correct way to handle washouts, re-routes, and marking.
In the Cave Run Lake area, the Sheltowee Trace Association will clear and harden the surface of the Sheltowee Trace along Clear Creek. The switchbacks will be repaired and widened, and safety fences will be installed on sharp curves.
For more information or to register as a volunteer with the Sheltowee Trace Association, visit www.sheltoweetrace.org.
