I had been awaiting Saturday afternoon all week. I don't cave as much as I canoe or hike but it is still one of my favorite things to do. Being stuck in a high-rise building in Nashville all week really makes me itch to get outdoors.

At Camp

First stop, the Blue Heron Ranger Station. We stopped to get the necessary back-country permit. The ranger on duty warned us about the wind. We assured her we'd choose our campsite carefully to avoid any falling limbs or trees. She then went on to warn us that the temperatures were expected to drop dramatically overnight.

Earlier this year while surfing the net, I stumbled upon an article written by a woman who had hiked the AHT in Indiana a few years back. Her description intrigued me, as I had never even heard of the Adventure Hiking Trail and I live in Oldham County just outside of Louisville. I emailed the Harrison-Crawford County State Forest people and within a couple of weeks I received a nice map.

Jack at Natural Arch


The Sheltowee Trace is a 280-mile national recreation trail that starts about 15 miles North of Morehead Kentucky and ends at Pickett State Park in Tennessee.  The trail was named after Daniel Boone who was given the name "Sheltowee" meaning big turtle by the Shawnee war chief Blackfish when Daniel was captured and then adopted as a son by the chief.
