Title: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: KYhiker40 on May 21, 2015, 03:17:55 PM
The "Where in the Red" thread has been so popular, why not expand on it?  I figure we'd better keep these somewhat easier because it could get impossible.  So, if anyone is interested in tagging along with this idea...

What waterfall is this?  Get it right, post the next pic.

Princess Falls in the BSF

That's it!  Thought this thread could be more of an inspiration to people to go there.  Princess Falls is awesome, with a great camp spot and easy access to good fishing on the Cumberland River.  You're up!

Copper Creek had it.  But yes, in Big South Fork is the place.  Copper Creek, you're up.

Is that one arch or two? If it's two, they must be twins.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: RCKT_RCCN on May 21, 2015, 10:16:40 PM
This might turn into the "where in the BSF" thread.  :)

If that's twin arches aren't they in Tennessee? Although as Mark W has pointed out elsewhere it should be in Kentucky because of the boundary survey error, so I guess we can claim them as our own!
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: copper creek on May 21, 2015, 10:18:29 PM
The photos are two different views of the same arch, which is in KY.

Ah, I see that now. Should have looked closer before commenting.  I will pass on guessing the place, but excited for the new thread.

I visited there for the first time in March. It was a beautiful day. We went down Pinnacle Tower Trail to the Sheltowee, then out to the falls.

Anyway, here's nice little cliff with a view. Not in the Red, of course.

If this off the Blue Heron Loop, overlooking the Cumberland River?
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: sweeper on May 23, 2015, 01:26:01 AM
It does not overlook the Cumberland River and it is not off the Blue Heron Loop. I'm going to classify your guess as "cold". I'll label the next as "warmer" or "colder" as appropriate.

High Rock, Bad Branch State Nature Preserve?
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: copper creek on May 26, 2015, 05:04:31 PM
Yes Mark, your turn.  The views from High Rock are outstanding.  When you look out over the Cumberland Plateau, you feel like you're seeing all of southeastern KY.

High Rock does not look as massive when looking at from below.

High Rock is absolutely spectacular. Wish I had hiked there more, definitely has to be one of the best hikes in Kentucky (the 7-mile partial loop up the trail, past Bad Branch, to High Rock, and then down).

Which arch is this?

Buffalo Arch

Correct, Buffalo Arch!

Beautiful arch and just barely in Kentucky . . . probably only a half-mile to the Tennessee state line from the arch.

Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

Thought so; nice shot of Log Arch, by the way. Fog really makes it nice. I only visited Kingdom Come State Park once but was pretty impressed by the views, especially from the Creech Overlook. Beautiful. On a less awesome note, the "campground" at KCSP leaves a lot to be desired, at least in my opinion.

Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: copper creek on June 01, 2015, 10:49:06 PM
I thought one of you might have hiked by there:  Resurgence Cave, near McKee, KY.

From Jackson County KY Tourism:  "This Sheltowee Trace hike leads through the War Fork Gorge to Resurgence Cave, where War Fork emerges, flowing cool and clear year-round. War Fork flows through a geologically interesting valley. Much of this stretch is drained by caves underlying the War Fork Valley. War Fork holds water at Turkey Foot Campground, the hike starting point, but is often dry upstream. It again goes underground below Turkey Foot before resuming flow at Resurgence Cave."

Someone else can post a photo of a different spot in KY.

Very true.  I almost said you got it, but thought I'd see if someone could name the spot or the trail first.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: KYhiker40 on June 07, 2015, 04:07:29 PM
Ok, going to be tough to pinpoint it looks like.  The pic was taken from the North South Trail at Land Between the Lakes.  The picture itself is of the Moss Creek beach area at Kentucky Lake, which is one of the first times the trail turns directly beside the lake when hiking Southbound on the North South trail.

Here are a few more pics from that hike.  I did 3 days on the trail, an easy out and back on the North side.  I'd like to line up a shuttle one day to do it all.  A lot of people talk bad about the trail, but I enjoyed it and found the fishing & wildlife to be great.

Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: Mark W on June 24, 2015, 11:03:57 AM
Correct! Process of elimination definitely worked. As far as I know, the only shelters in the DBNF are: Twin Branch, Star Creek, Bark Camp Creek, and Cotton Patch. I've been to all except Cotton Patch. I think I might be forgetting one though . . .
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: hungrybear on June 24, 2015, 03:48:06 PM
I don't know of any other shelters in KY.  The Cotton Patch Shelter has a decent view of the Cumberland River below it, a compost toilet with no walls, and an old chimney nearby.

Someone from Lexington should be able to identify which trail this waterfall is off of.

If memory serves me correctly it is near Hanson's Point. I have a pic of the smiley face on one of my Facebook albums.. Regardless of the smile or place, it is graffiti and does not belong etched into the top of a sandstone cliff. Bumper stickers or t-shirts are a much better place.

Seeing the picture from the North South Trail of the corn field brought back unpleasant memories of getting covered with hundreds/thousands of tiny ticks on this trail years ago.  I learned my lesson not to hike this trail in the spring or summer.

I will post a new picture shortly.

Nope to Copper and nope to RCKT_RCCN.

Yep, that's a familiar sight to me . . . By my best recollection I've crossed that bridge at least 20 times over the years.

But I'll keep quiet for a few days and see if anyone else recognizes it. I know there are a few here that will!

A hint: the bridge is along the Sheltowee Trace and is near a named waterfall.  Mark W has written several times about his adventures in the area.  I'm pretty sure some of you others have been there as well.

I'm going to bend the rules a bit and post another picture and hopefully this thread can continue:

Twin Branch is a really neat area that few people visit. It's a fun area to explore all day and then have the shelter to camp at during the night. Also some nice campsites along Twin Branch itself and a pretty great "secret" waterfall in the area.

Correct! That went quick . . . you're up.

As an aside, it's worth pondering if Pilot Knob could've been posted in the "Where in the Red?" thread. It is a sandstone formation in the Red River watershed, in the Cumberland Plateau, but is definitely an outlier compared to the other formations/concentration of rugged terrain in the "main" RRG. Also, the country between Pilot Knob and the RRG is beautiful . . . riding a bicycle from Pilot Knob all the way to Sky Bridge on back roads will give you a new appreciation for how gorgeous that country is!

I love everything from the highlands and Olympic south... and yes the outcroppings at the top of PK are most like Daniel Boone than the Knobs region. The sandstone etchings are spectacular.

then again it'd be hard to point out an area of the state I don't love the geology.
But the fengshui of the area you're talking about is extremely Shire, and soothing on some kind of genetic European level. I very much enjoy the area... thanks for the photo. Did you feel like Daniel Boone? LOL

Haha, nope . . . that pun was actually unintentional, although I have noticed that pun made by many others (most noticeably Red River Gorgeous cabin rentals).

I take it you're not talking about the Highlands in Louisville  :D ? I grew up there and as far as non-natural landscapes go it is one of my favorites. I feel fortunate to have been raised there and near Cherokee and Seneca parks.

Eagle's nest is also a name for one of the Berea Forest overlooks.

Conferring with Bereans I will give you credit because your overlook is on the other side but you're on the right mountain and I am not sure this view has a famous name. It is on the north pinnacles trail.
Copper you're up!

Here is a map of Berea Forest.  I thought the two primary overlooks off of the northern trail were called Eagle's Nest and Buzzard's Roost.

Shifu, close enough.  Little Mudlick Creek is the name of the stream, thus the falls are named Little Mudlick Falls.  This stream flows into Paint Creek and then on to the Levisa River.
Shifu, please add this site to your already extensive list.
This is in Johnson County, near Paintsville.
I can give gps coordinates, if interested.

This website gives a nice history lesson, if interested...

Devil's Backbone (?) . . . city is Jackson, KY.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: D. Stevens on February 01, 2016, 12:54:33 PM
Correct!

The ridge that formerly existed was called "The Devil's Backbone" and it divided what was once the the largest oxbow bend on the Kentucky River, known as "The Pan Bowl".  Before the ridge was blasted out and dams were built, the Kentucky River came 60 feet from intersecting itself at this point, however, the bend was seven miles long.

you can drive through that arch. Used to be a train line I believe.

hmmm. But in that mode, the creek next to wrigley arch and falls has some rapids, off the side of KY711

I have no idea what this feature would be called though.... *scratches head*
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: refmo on March 05, 2016, 08:35:58 AM
ShifuCareaga, that is correct - your turn!
The stream originally went around (or possibly through, according to some accounts) the arch.  When the railroad line was put in, they diverted the stream by building this 'aqueduct'.  Otherwise, they would have had to build two bridges, one on each side of the arch.
Picture of the arch from last Sunday....

Upon further review.....

The previous photo is not actually in the Commonwealth of Kentucky!  I just happened to revisit the map, because I haven't been here in a while, and noticed we were just across the border at this spot.  Guess if you want, but here's another photo, within the proper confines.  First to guess either can post next.  Sorry.

Correct.  The first picture is at Garden Hole in the Russell Fork River.  I was thinking the river was the Kentucky-Virginia border at that point, but was mistaken.

no and no

It's rare to see a rock as well covered in moss as this and moreover it's quite striking when you see this one. Didn't wander into the woods and find one it's off a trail.

OK hint 2: not RRG OR BSF

(ps - that's what I think about these random windows you guys post, LOL!)

looks a lot like the KY river near Devil's Bend. I have no idea how to be more specific. But when you drive to the KRP, it has those flat round tops like that. I imagine lots of parts along the river look like that that. I haven't explored the river much above Frankfort...

That's close enough for me.  This was taken at Asbury Trails, which is on the North side of the river between High Bridge and Harrodsburg Road, looking east, with High Bridge being somehwere in the unseen distance.

I've not heard of Devils Bend, but if it is the keyhole bend roughly halfway between High Bridge and Camp Nelson, I can see how this could look like it, if looking West.

Sorry, that's the area I meant, which is apparently Polly's Bend... whereas Devil's Elbow is on the OTHER side of the US27 bridge also near to Camp Nelson, hence my confusion. I meant the large bend area where the Palisades are, exactly as you described it. Still good enough? https://www.topoquest.com/map.php?lat=37.77121&lon=-84.60332&datum=nad83&zoom=16&map=auto&coord=d&mode=zoomout&size=m

It's far from the center of the state and not DBNF. Actually this area is very important for a particular sport reason.

Well I'll call it. This is the Rec Area - ie a Swimming hole - at the bottom of the Breaks rapids, which are used for Olympic whitewater trials sometimes. This is basically right on the border, but inside the state.

Well, everything I post no one guesses... RCCT you want to throw up something?

It is not along the Sheltowee. The Sheltowee is not far away though, but you would need to take a connector trail to get there from here. There's also an iconic landmark nearby, if that helps.

Not too random or harsh, laurelwanderer got it right! Tebbs Bend spans the Green River south of Campbellsville. The original bridge was recently removed and replaced by this new one. Now the original bridge is located in a field nearby as part of a walking path. Neat little civil war site to visit for anyone finding themselves in central Kentucky.

Is it the falls along Pounder Branch?

Shifu, That is probably the fullest I had seen the falls.  It usually appears as 2 different ones from the creek and stream that meet there. I will PM you the directions but I will have to look up the Forest Service Rds first. I live near there so I just know the way. When you go to visit the Daylight twin arches you can see the waterfall as well.

I don't think your picture is Maude's Crack (I just threw out a guess), but to be sure, it is near the Terry Cemetery trailhead. You can climb up through the crack from the Muir Trail below. The Muir overlook is nearby as well. It is a good area for dayhikes or overnights.

Right on. And just for further clarification, Maude's Crack is in Tennessee.

Although, if there hadn't been the error in surveying the KY/TN boundary ("The Walker Line"), then Maude's Crack (and I believe Twin Arches as well) would actually be in Kentucky. For more about the surveying error, read here:

Thanks for posting that link, that was a really interesting read. I'd seen the "Simpson County Error" on maps and head folk talks about it (i.e. surveyors being bribed with moonshine to make the error to benefit a Kentucky landowner) but that was the first I'd really read about it. Pretty neat stuff!

Also, I was reading the January 2017 issue of Backpacker Magazine and it looks like you were quoted in there about the Buckeye Trail "Little Loop" hike in Ohio? Small world!
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: Captain Blue on December 03, 2016, 10:17:49 PM
Yes, very interesting indeed. I drive that I-65 section of the KY-TN line a couple of times a year. I didn't know about that "Simpson County Error". I'll be on the lookout for it next time.

On the Backpacker article, I got a call out of the blue from a writer several months ago. I gave a few quotes on the spot and that what they printed. It's not exactly my words but close enough. I'm glad someone saw it!

I guess that one was harder than I expected but it is Bear Rock Arch at Pine Mtn State Park.

According to the park: "Local folklore maintains that the area is so named because longhunters tossed ropes up through the opening and hoisted bears and other large game animals up for cleaning and skinning."

Some else please post to keep it going.

Well it was. I was too worried it would be totally wrong so I waited two days to get the courage! I thought for sure it wasn't DSF but I couldn't think of any other....

So how hard a choice should I give. I can never gauge with you guys. You know random rocks and windows of RRG but I always seem to post something too obscure.

hmm....
OK, I'll give a hint on this one... it's NOT the Blood River Seeps. It's not that far west, actually...

But I totally recommend people visit the Blood River Seeps.  Most obscure place in KY, IMO.

Okay, I think it's time for someone else to give it a go. This photo was taken on the Asbury trails. It is really a cool feature, as there is a small cave area at the top of the falls, with the water flowing from further up inside the rock. Also one of the muddiest trails I've done in awhile.

Who wants to take over?  :)

Nice little bike trail for those that like that kind of thing.  That particular day we rode around Bernheim then skipped over the Jim Beam for a visit before riding this trail.  I probably wouldn't bike down 245 from Bernheim to Jim Beam again, though...and back.  Traffic is pretty crazy, next time I think I'll just throw the bikes in the truck and drive from one place to the other.

Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: laurelwanderer on February 17, 2017, 12:37:22 PM
Devil's Jump?

Gene's you are correct.

Here is a shortened story of how the rapid got its name.

In the early 1800s Martin Beaty was drilling for salt wells in McCreary County , KY. He and his crew were drilling a new well and kept going deeper and deeper. The crew got concerned that they were going to deep and might drill into Hell. They finally struck something and up through the pipe came a sticky black liquid. They didn't know what oil was but saw how the substance could burn and were convinced they had drilled into Hell. The men collected samples and one man was selected to take them down the river.  The raft overturned and the man returned to the crew. He stated that when he reached the part of the river going between the rocks, the Devil himself was jumping rock to rock, sank the raft and took back the black liquid the men had stole from Hell.

I guess I'll call this one and give someone else a shot.

It was Fort Duffield near Louisville/Ft. Knox The best preserved earthworks fort in KY. It's quite a steep little hike to go because they have closed off the upper lot. When you hike up you really get a sense of why the fort was never even attacked. However despite never being attacked there are redoubts, full scale walls, and there's a little cabin there to visit. The walkway is there to preserve the earthworks.  I highly recommend this day trip.

OK, who wants to go?

I feel like the identifying feature is just to the right lol. I keep scrolling hoping to get it.

Um... it reminds me of the boat launch at the end of the Buffalo Canyon highway down to the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River.  Past Natural Arch.

But I really have no clue. If it weren't so narrow I'd also say that the hills seem like Cave Run Lake.  The water "color" reminds me of Martin's Fork Lake, but I don't think this is southeastern KY

Funny thought... no one has put anything up about Herrington since that Dix River dam (from below) was posted.

in short, I have no idea.

Sorry shifu, your response got lost in the flurry or recent postings. I guess you can go for it.

I'm a little disappointed no one knew this one. At least two people I know have hiked across this falls, and one did it within the last couple weeks... they even wrote a trip report about it! Guess it wasn't as memorable as it was to me.  ::)
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

I refrained from posting, since RCKT_RCCN and I had corresponded about the area prior to its posting and I felt I had an unfair advantage. I am also surprised that no one else "got" it.

It was a memorable waterfall to me, as the second time I went across it it was a solid sheet of ice and really scary! Not a place I wanted to fall.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

Mark I figured as much for you. You are truly an honorable guy when it comes to these guessing games!

I think this highlights how infrequently visitors make it past the main attraction in the area. There are so many treasures waiting for those willing to climb the stairs and keep on going out the ridge line. The whole time I was there I kept thinking to myself that my little band of hiking buddies were the only people to have been there in weeks. It's not a secret place, but it sure felt like one. And those are the best, right?

Hard to guess correctly when you don't spend much time on "real" trails.   :P

But I firmly believe the adventure begins where the trail ends.  So push your way through the deadfall, scramble up the cliff weakness, do whatever it takes (but don't climb over the rail & jump out onto the rock)!!.   ;D

LOL! This cracked me up.

One of my funniest Kentucky trash stories is of hiking the cliffline behind a hard-to-access waterfall in the southern end of the Daniel Boone National Forest. We found the remains of an old moonshine still and then about 100 feet further along the cliff found a bag of Miracle Gro and some tomato seed planters leftover from another attempt at an illicit industry.

Anyway, here's a location guaranteed to be in Kentucky.

Honey Creek is far south enough that it would be in Tennessee even if the "real" border (and not the "Walker Line": http://www2.vcdh.virginia.edu/lewisandclark/students/projects/adventurers/walkerline.html ) was used today. I think the error was 17 miles to the North, so pretty much anything 17 miles south of the current border in that area should have been in Kentucky. So Twin Arches, Maude's Crack, Pickett State Park, etc. would all be in Kentucky.

I'll mix things up a bit here since I didn't want to dig through a bunch of pictures.

Honor system, no cheating, first person to post the name of a Kentucky county NOT named after a person off the top of their head can go next. There are only a handful of the 120 that meet this criteria.

my guess would be on the stretch of road past the twin knobs campground and such looking at Cave Run Lake; there's an overlook up that way I sued once to clear my head.

BUT there are 2 other lakes in the DBNF so I might not even have the right lake.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

Very good guess, but incorrect. You are on the right path as far as overlooks and roads go.

Probably been posted a hundred times, but it gets me off of the clock!  I don't seem to take enough photos of places without people in them.  And when I do, the places are either too obvious for this crowd, or have no distinguishing features at all that would differentiate them from any other picture of a beautiful creek or woods.

FWIW, I don't think it is terrible to mention the area as awesome, I just think it is a mistake to post a photo along with a name, it just makes it too easy to find online. I don't know if it makes sense, but my rule of thumb is post photos and no name/details or name/details and no photo.

For those that may be interested, here is a pretty cool website I stumbled across, links to the highest point in each county.  Apparently "collecting" county, state, national, etc. highbpoints is a thing, naturally called Highpointing.  Something I wasn't aware of.

Green River Knob?

That's the first place I thought of when I saw the picture.  Looks like it was taken from Hwy 837 heading north, at around noon or a little after. :)

correct! tallest point in Cumberland/Knobs region you're up!

edit: yeah, let's see I took the photo 12-16-17 at 1:26 so not bad! And yes that's the right direction and highway :)

I live fairly close to there and had actually just been looking at the topo of that area the day before.  The old topo maps show a trail up the northwest side.  Would be interesting, and tiring, to hike up there and check out the view.

When I look at photos, especially in these threads, I always try to judge the season by foliage, and the position of the sun (shadows) for direction and time of day.  It's an amusing exercise of the mind, and gets easier the more you do it.  It helps with navigation also.

will have to look on the LiDAR and find that old trail. I've been meaning to climb that knob.

I have a couple new places on the Map (hiddendestinationsky.com (http://hiddendestinationsky.com)) now, scroll to bottom of list... and I want to climb them all! I am particularly smitten with Rohan Knob, and a couple random peaks...  Let me know if you look through the list and have any helpful intel on how to hike them, shoot me a PM.

I am thankful to whoever posted peakbagger. I saw it before and forgot all about that useful site!

Oh guys... I'll probably never finish seeing all these, certainly not this year! I guess I'll have to keep missing my favorite places for another year or two. It's like a blessing and a curse. So many new peaks and waterfalls, and places already on the "Not on Bucket" ... I'm going to be jonesin' for Dog Slaughter Falls or Eagle Falls or Natural Arch.  Even some places I went just 2 years ago I miss a LOT lol....

OK, back to the task at hand....

So if this is the Old Fort Harrod, maybe this is some place along the Salt River??

hmmm....
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

I've been to Rohan's Knob, but never on top.  I knew some people that lived in that area.  A fairly prominant feature, it can be seen from several miles away.

But no, Ft Harrod and the Salt River are not correct.  A little more west.

wow this is a really good one.
hmm... is it a lot of rapids or are you in a neck?
Rough River Dam SRP? Some people really love it there, I've not spent much time, literally just passed through.

I really desire to go back to there and to Barren River Lake SP, there's a campground I want to do at "the Narrows"

If it ain't either of these (Rough or Barren River) I tell you I'm stumped.

Not Rough River or Barren River.

Here is another photo from the area.  This photo is roughly 1 mile west of where the original photos were taken.  The stream shown in the original photos flows through the afore mentioned fort property, then empties into the body of water in this photo.

When we camped there, we heard a noise in the night that I've never heard before or since.  Wasn't a howl, nor a bark, nor a growl, can't explain it.  Except the noise was really loud, and then accompanied by instances of a wimper.  My only guess is maybe a wild boar found a bedded down fawn.  We almost stepped on a bedded fawn just yards behind our tent, pretty cool experience.  Never saw it, then it just rose up out of the brush within a couple of yards from us, stared at us, then walked off.

Apparently there are also some wild hogs that are there.  Whatever it was, it lasted for about 5 minutes.  It took me a while to go back to sleep.

There is an official trail that you climb through the crack up to the top. The trail continues for a little bit on the top.

Well, most of my KY hiking has recently been in the Red, or at Berea. But I did get down here not too long ago. There did appear to remnants of a user trail up here, but it looks like fire damage and blowdown and regrowth obscured much of it. Where is this ridgeline?

Bonus points if you can name the ridgeline, which is IDd on the FS and USGS topos.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: ShifuCareaga on February 22, 2018, 01:13:23 PM
I do not think this is it, but it reminds me of the KY80 bridge near Baylor Hickman SNP - which has some old growth trees in it. On the opposite side it kind of looks like this.

However, I am terrible at these kinds of things (rock features)... so my mind also goes to the overlook trail just past natural arch on the right. got a tick there so I remember it well.

Hmm the ridge?? no way I have that. That's a Bazinga level question lol
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: RCKT_RCCN on February 22, 2018, 03:03:58 PM
Wild guess here, Hunter Bluff out in W. Kentucky? But it wouldn't appear on FS maps, so not likely. Hmm.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: sweeper on February 22, 2018, 08:09:19 PM
Not Baylor Hickman. Not Hunter Bluff. Definitely on the Forest Service map.

Here's a view looking the other way (NE) that shows a named knob. The cliffs are more impressive on that side, but they were also in shadow at that point and not very photogenic.
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?

looks like Caras Galadhon (Lothlorion)  :P

I really don't know, but I guess we'd have to swing back up towards the Cave Run area?
There's a LOT of cliff and named knobs...  so I'll go with ... Amburgey Rocks! (I haven't been to those)
Title: Re: Where in Kentucky?
Post by: sweeper on February 22, 2018, 10:21:01 PM
Right region, wrong rocks. And I didn't see any wood elves in the area, but that's to be expected. I mean, I didn't, but if they trusted me enough to show themselves, I certainly wouldn't talk about it.

Anyway, the topo shows an arch near this part of the ridge. Does that help?

Nothing official, trailwise. Lotsa briers and scratches involved. Like I said, it appears there was a trail across the top, but I didn't follow the remnants to any end. The game have found a way around the worst part, but it's not easy to find or follow. Stupid deer.

The pine trees remind me of the Little Bloody Creek gorge but I don't recall a rock shelter or cave this size there.
Are we talking DBNF and/or Northern?

Yes, it is within the park.  Any idea where in the park?  I assume it a pretty obscure place that we stumbled upon so might have to just give it to you based on that alone.

The characteristics reminded me of First Creek, which is why I guessed Mammoth Cave. All the moss covering, the coloration of the rock. Very familiar. However, I don't think it's in First Creek. Based on the scale I'd guess Bylew Creek area, but maybe Second Creek (haven't explored either but want to soon!).

None of those but I'd say you close enough, you up!  It is a shelter/cave along the river.  Actually has a span arch in the ceiling of it.  6-7' opening.  We called it Cathedral Shelter, no idea on an official name if any.  There are beech trees near it that are carved from the 1910-1940's which are cool to see as well.  I'd imagine, being along the river, it was used by natives for large dry shelter.

The neatest part is the conglomerate.  There is a line near the center of the shelter.  The ceiling is half just regular looking sandstone and the other half is packed with the white quartz pebble conglomerate.  The line goes through the arch too.

No, not in the gorge.  It is off trail but close to a road.

Not sure if they are just very similar or the same falls. Here is a picture of what I think might be the same falls as in your photo:

If it's Laurel county then laurelwanderer should be best at this.

Mark,

Sorry for the slow response, but no those are not it.  That looks to be quite a smaller rockshelter.  The shelter in my photo is quite large.  Not Yahoo Falls large but rivals it, especially with the limit and hiddeness of it.

Not Beaver Creek, that is in Sterns district.  If not guessed soon, I'll post another from the state.

well Mark W it was bound to happen... we found someone that whips us both.

I have an idea for making this thread more feisty. We should post easier, more common stuff. We all love the obscure stuff but this thread suffers from people having a hard time to guess. If we pick more common things, hopefully it moves a bit quicker.

You are probably thinking of the Sublimity Bridge, which is visble from the overlook as well.
