Forest Service enforcing resource protection rules in the Red River Gorge

Hemlock Cliffs area

The sandstone cliffs, springs and rocky streams of the Hemlock Cliffs area of the Hoosier National Forest in south central Indiana form a landscape reminiscent of the backcountry at Mammoth Cave National Park or certain sections of the Red River Gorge.  The relatively short Hemlock Cliffs Trail, approximately a mile in length, features two seasonal waterfalls as its main attractions.  During a mid-March trip to the area, these waterfalls were flowing and clear waist-deep pools were present in the trail-side creeks.  However, the mission of the four-night backpacking trip my girlfriend and I embarked on over our spring break was to explore as much of the area off the beaten path as possible.  A U.S.G.S. topographical map of the area aided us greatly in deciding where to focus our hiking and in making sure we stayed on Forest Service property. ...Read More

Officials take a swing at stopping spread of ash tree killers

Green, mean tree-killing machines are getting closer to our area, officials announced this week.

Researchers studying contents of the purple bug catchers local residents have seen dangling from trees in the last month have discovered emerald ash borers in several northern Kentucky counties.

A result of the discovery is a quarantine issued by Kentucky State Entomologist John Obrycki, of the affected counties for certain wood products associated with the pests or actions which could lead to the spread of the insects and decimation of ash trees in the state. ...Read More

Cycling through Red River Gorge

The 2009 Tour of the Red River Gorge team cycling competitions June 19-21 and July 13-19 will set various courses for amateurs and elite contestants. Route options range from 35 to 104 miles in length and travel through six counties. All total, about 1,000 riders will zip through set courses between Lexington, Stanton, Beattyville, Clay City, Winchester and other towns in east-central Kentucky.

Missing Penn State Student Found Drowned in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. —  Authorities in Tennessee say they've recovered the body of a 20-year-old Penn State student believed to have drowned in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Park spokesman Bob Miller tells WBIR-TV that the body of Nublan Zaki Norhadi was recovered Monday afternoon about 30 feet underwater in a pool beneath a waterfall. Officials aren't sure if he fell over the falls or was swimming below them.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – Two state agencies will be participating in the Big Sandy Adventure Tourism Conference & Expo June 7-8 in Prestonsburg.

The Kentucky Department of Parks and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will be hosting events or providing information related to adventure tourism opportunities during the conference at the Mountain Arts Center.
